Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, INDIA: A shocking case of infanticide has rocked Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district, where a 26-year-old mother and her female partner were arrested for allegedly murdering her five-month-old infant son. The crime, reportedly driven by a desire to continue their illicit relationship, came to light after the child’s father uncovered chilling evidence on his wife’s phone.
The accused, identified as S. Bharathi (26) and her partner Sumithra (20) of Chinnati village near Kelamangalam, were taken into custody after police unearthed digital proof linking them to the brutal act. According to investigators, Bharathi, who was married to K. Suresh, had two daughters and gave birth to a baby boy five months ago.
The Incident
On November 4, Bharathi allegedly strangled her infant son while breastfeeding him at their home when other family members were away. Upon their return, she claimed the baby had died due to accidental suffocation during feeding. The grieving family believed her version and went ahead with the burial on their agricultural land.
However, Suresh later grew suspicious of his wife’s unusually calm and cheerful behavior following their child’s death. Acting on his doubts, he checked Bharathi’s mobile phone and was horrified to find photos and videos indicating her romantic involvement with Sumithra, their neighbor. More shockingly, he discovered that Bharathi had sent Sumithra a photograph of the infant after his death, along with suggestive messages implying her role in the killing.
The Investigation
Suresh immediately lodged a complaint with the Kelamangalam Police, prompting a detailed investigation. Police soon uncovered a series of incriminating chats between Bharathi and Sumithra, which revealed that Sumithra had allegedly pressured Bharathi to kill her son—seeing the baby as an obstacle to their relationship.
Acting on this information, police exhumed the infant’s body on November 7, and a post-mortem examination confirmed that the child had been murdered by strangulation. Based on the forensic evidence and the accused women’s confessions, both Bharathi and Sumithra were arrested.
Custody and Community Reaction
The duo was produced before a local magistrate and remanded to judicial custody in Dharmapuri prison on November 8. The case has sent shockwaves across Chinnati village and surrounding areas, with residents expressing disbelief and outrage over the nature of the crime.
Police officials stated that further investigation is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events and verify the extent of Sumithra’s involvement in the planning and execution of the murder. Authorities are also examining the digital evidence for any additional communications that might shed light on the motive.
