Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A suspected case of honour killing has shocked Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, where a 24-year-old man was allegedly tied up and beaten to death by the family of his cousin-cum-girlfriend. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in Parchchh village under Maudaha police limits.
The victim, identified as Ravi Shriwas, a resident of Jaspura in Banda district, had reportedly gone to meet his 18-year-old cousin and girlfriend, Manisha, ahead of her scheduled marriage on November 2. Soon after his arrival, the girl’s family allegedly caught him inside the house, leading to a violent confrontation.
According to police, Manisha’s uncle Pintu first discovered Ravi and confronted him. A heated argument broke out, during which Pintu allegedly attacked Ravi with a knife. Villagers said that Pintu, along with other family members, then tied Ravi with a rope and brutally assaulted him with sticks.
Even as Ravi begged for water, no one came to his aid. When he collapsed, the family reportedly panicked and rushed him to the Community Health Centre in Maudaha, claiming he had consumed poison. Doctors, however, noticed severe external injuries and alerted the police. Ravi was declared dead on arrival.
Soon after learning about Ravi’s death, Manisha attempted suicide by slitting her throat. She was immediately taken to the Maudaha government hospital and remains in critical condition. Her uncle Pintu also reportedly attempted suicide after the incident and has been referred to the district hospital for treatment.
Contradictory Claims
While Ravi’s family has accused Manisha’s relatives of murder, the girl’s family claims it was Ravi who first attacked Pintu with a knife.
Manisha’s grandmother said that when she returned home from Maudaha, she found Ravi inside the house. “When the girl called out, he stabbed Pintu,” she alleged. Pintu’s wife also claimed that Ravi attacked her husband as soon as he opened the door.
Ravi’s father, Uma Shankar alias Kali Deen, lodged an FIR against five people, accusing them of killing his son.
Police Investigation
Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Deeksha Sharma confirmed that three suspects have been detained. “The preliminary investigation suggests Ravi was murdered inside the house. The woman’s condition is serious, and her statement will be recorded once she stabilises,” SP Sharma said.
Ravi and Manisha were reportedly first cousins, and their relationship was known but disapproved of by both families. Ravi’s family had moved from Parchchh to Banda about 20 years ago.
Earlier this year, Ravi had allegedly eloped with Manisha just days before her first wedding in June. She was later traced and brought back under police pressure. Her second marriage had been arranged in Jalaun district for November 2 — a development that reportedly angered Ravi, who even recorded a video before leaving for Parchchh, expressing frustration over her family’s decision.
The situation in the village remains tense, and additional police have been deployed to prevent any unrest.
