Kolkata, West Bengal, INDIA: A horrific double murder has shaken Chandipur village in the Jamalpur area of South 24 Parganas district, after the blood-soaked bodies of a woman and her young son were discovered inside their home early Sunday morning. The victims have been identified as Manowara Bibi (40) and her seven-year-old son, Anwar Halder.
According to police sources, preliminary investigation points towards domestic violence as the motive. The prime suspect is Manowara’s husband, Firoz Halder, who has been missing since the incident and is now believed to be on the run. Police have launched an intensive search operation to trace him.
The incident came to light when neighbours noticed that Manowara’s house door had been left open since morning. After receiving no response to their calls, a few locals entered the house and were horrified to find the floor drenched in blood, with the mother and child lying motionless. They immediately informed the Dholahat police, who rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies, and sent them to the Kakdwip police morgue for post-mortem examination.
Investigators believe that both victims may have been strangled or suffocated first, and then their throats slit with a sharp blade. “The preliminary signs point to a case of domestic violence. We are questioning family members and neighbours to establish the sequence of events,” said a senior police officer from the Sundarbans Police District.
Superintendent of Police Koteshwar Rao confirmed that several members of the woman’s in-laws’ family have been detained for questioning. “The husband has been absconding since the crime. A manhunt is underway, and we are confident of solving the case soon,” he said.
Locals described the victim as a hardworking woman who supported herself and her son independently. “She was a strong woman who worked hard to provide for her family. We are certain her husband is responsible for this brutal act. He has been missing since last night,” said Karimuddin Haldar, a resident of Chandipur.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving residents in grief and outrage. Aftauddin Laskar, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, called the murder “tragic and heartbreaking,” adding, “We have urged police to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. The party stands with the victim’s family, and we are confident the culprit will be brought to justice soon.”
Police have increased security deployment in the area to prevent unrest, as tension continues to grip the locality following the grisly discovery. The investigation is ongoing, with multiple teams tracking possible hideouts of the accused.
As the quiet village of Chandipur struggles to come to terms with the brutality of the crime, residents have demanded swift justice for Manowara and her young son — victims of what appears to be another tragic case of domestic rage turned fatal.
