Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 33-year-old married woman, Nisha Singh, died after suffering severe burn injuries under mysterious circumstances in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. While her family alleged that she was set ablaze by a man who had been harassing her, police have also hinted at the possibility of self-immolation based on preliminary evidence.
The incident took place on September 6, when Nisha, who was visiting her father’s home, left on her scooter to consult a doctor. Minutes later, she arrived at a local clinic in a severely burnt condition, screaming for help. Despite being rushed from a local facility to Lohia Hospital and later referred to Saifai Medical College, she succumbed to her injuries during the transfer.
Her father, Balram Singh, alleged in his complaint that Nisha had been harassed for months by a local man named Deepak (31), who, along with his friends, set her on fire after she refused to speak to him. “When I reached the hospital, she was crying in pain and told me that Deepak burnt her. He had been pressuring her to meet and talk,” Singh said.
Her sister, Neetu Singh, also confirmed that Nisha had confided in her about Deepak’s persistent harassment, though she never informed their parents. Nisha’s husband, Amit Chauhan, who works in Delhi, said he was unaware of any such ordeal. “We spoke in the morning of the incident, but she never mentioned anything. She never complained to me,” he told police.
An FIR has been lodged against Deepak and others on the basis of the family’s allegations. Senior police officer Sanjay Kumar said four teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused.
However, police officials also said they are not ruling out self-immolation. SP Fatehpur Arti Singh told reporters that CCTV footage, call records, and online transactions are being examined. “We found that she received a call from Deepak around 9.15 am and left home shortly after. Despite scanning over 100 CCTV cameras, the exact scene of crime has not been identified. Some circumstantial evidence suggests possible self-immolation, but we are investigating all angles,” Singh said.
Deepak has since been arrested and sent to jail.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and final conclusions will be drawn once forensic and electronic evidence is fully analyzed
