Vijayapura, Karnataka, INDIA: A former gram panchayat president was shot dead in broad daylight at a barber shop in Devar Nimbargi village of Chadchan taluk on Wednesday, September 3.

The deceased, identified as Bheemanagouda Biradar (40), was allegedly a rowdy-sheeter with multiple murder cases pending against him, police said. He had also served as the president of the Devar Nimbargi gram panchayat and maintained control over the body for the past decade.

According to police, the incident occurred around 8:50 am when four men entered the barber shop, threw chilli powder into Biradar’s and his associates’ eyes, and fired four rounds at him from close range. Biradar sustained bullet injuries to his head and chest and collapsed on the spot. Villagers rushed him to a private hospital in Vijayapura, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The assailants—identified as Wasim Maniyar, Razivulla Makanadar, Moulasab Borgi, and Firoz Sheikh—later surrendered before the police and confessed to the crime. They were arrested on murder charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 103(1) and other relevant provisions.

Superintendent of Police Laxman B. Nimbargi said the murder was the result of multiple grudges harboured against Biradar. One accused had allegedly paid Biradar ₹1 lakh in return for a house under the government’s Ashraya housing scheme but neither received the house nor his money back.

Adding to the motive, Biradar’s wife Rajeshri Biradar alleged that the killing was an act of revenge for her husband’s role in the 2023 imprisonment of Zakir Maniyar, brother of accused Wasim. Zakir had been jailed for making casteist remarks against a village panchayat development officer, with Biradar reportedly instrumental in his arrest and prosecution.

Police sources said political rivalry could also be a factor. With gram panchayat elections approaching, Biradar was allegedly manoeuvring to install one of his loyalists as the next president.

Circle Inspector Suresh Bendegumbal, along with officers Praveen Gerebal and others, visited the crime scene. The Chadchan police are investigating further to establish the exact motive behind the murder.
