Jaipur, Rajasthan, INDIA: A domestic quarrel over a WiFi connection and household chores ended in tragedy in Jaipur’s Kardhani area when a 31-year-old man brutally murdered his mother in front of his family. The accused, Naveen Singh, was arrested by Kardhani police on Monday September 15 and later booked for murder.

According to the police, Naveen, a Bachelor of Arts graduate who earlier worked at a call centre with Genpact, had been unemployed for some time and was battling drug and alcohol addiction. His worsening dependence and erratic behaviour had strained relations with his family. He reportedly kept himself locked in his room for most of the day, only emerging occasionally.

The incident

Police said the fatal altercation broke out in the family’s residence in Arun Vihar Colony near Vaidyaji Chauraha, where Naveen lived with his parents and two sisters. On Monday September 15 afternoon, his mother, Santosh Singh (51), disconnected the WiFi connection after an argument and scolded him when the LPG cylinder in the kitchen ran out.

Enraged, Naveen first punched his mother in the face before grabbing her by the throat. He then went to his room, returned with a wooden stick, and repeatedly struck her on the head even as she collapsed in the kitchen. A video clip, reportedly recorded by a family member, shows the accused raining blows on his mother despite attempts by his father and sisters to restrain him.

Neighbours, alarmed by the screams, alerted police, who rushed to the spot and detained the accused. Santosh, bleeding from her ear and unconscious, was taken to Manipal Hospital, where she succumbed during treatment. A medical board’s postmortem report later confirmed death due to head injuries.

Family torn apart

The victim’s husband, Laxman Singh, a Delhi Police constable and retired Army serviceman, expressed his anguish in searing words.

“He was the only son who ruined his family by killing his mother. Hang him; we have no connection with him anymore,” he told reporters.

Laxman revealed that his son had long struggled with substance abuse and rarely spoke to the family unless intoxicated. Relations had deteriorated so much that he himself had not spoken to his son for months before the killing.

The family had been preparing for the wedding of their daughter scheduled for February 2026. “He destroyed everything — our family, our joy, our future. My wife who raised him is gone. May God give him the harshest punishment,” Laxman said.

Troubled past

Investigators said Naveen married in November 2019, but within months, his wife left him and later filed a dowry harassment case in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. UP Police had issued a warrant against him in connection with that case.

Police have seized the wooden stick used in the assault and collected forensic evidence from the crime scene with the help of the FSL team.

DCP (West) Hanuman Prasad confirmed Naveen’s arrest, stating, “The accused has been taken into custody and booked for murder. He will face the full force of the law.”

The incident has left the neighbourhood in shock, with residents struggling to comprehend how a dispute over WiFi and household chores spiralled into a brutal killing within a family.
