Gurugram, Haryana, INDIA: In a shocking case of domestic violence, Gurugram police arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly killing his father and brutally assaulting his wife with a cricket bat and a steel water can at their home in Bhimgarh Kheri village.
The incident took place on Tuesday September 23 evening between 8 pm and 9 pm when the accused, identified as Neeraj Singh, returned home in an inebriated state. Police said Neeraj frequently consumed liquor and was in the habit of assaulting his wife, Preeti Singh (37), after returning home drunk.
According to investigators, on the night of the incident, Preeti objected to Neeraj’s liquor consumption, especially during Navratri. The objection triggered a violent outburst. Enraged, Neeraj allegedly picked up a cricket bat and began assaulting her mercilessly, striking her on the head and upper body. During the attack, Neeraj also threatened to kill her.
Hearing the commotion, Neeraj’s father, Gulab Singh (75), a practicing lawyer at the Gurugram civil court, intervened in an attempt to protect his daughter-in-law. However, Neeraj turned on him and repeatedly attacked him with the bat and a steel water camper, causing severe head and internal injuries.
Soon after, Preeti’s brother and local police reached the spot. By then, both the injured victims had been rushed to Aryan Hospital by family members. Doctors declared Gulab Singh dead on arrival, while Preeti was admitted with grievous injuries. Initially declared unfit to give a statement, she later recounted the sequence of events to the police on Wednesday.
“Neeraj returned home drunk on Tuesday evening and picked a quarrel with his wife. When she objected, he assaulted her. His father tried to intervene but was brutally attacked. Gulab Singh suffered multiple head injuries and internal trauma and could not survive,” said Sandeep Turan, PRO of Gurugram Police.
Police said the accused initially tried to hide inside the house when officers arrived but was quickly apprehended with the help of neighbours who prevented him from fleeing.
A case of murder (Section 302 IPC), along with other relevant charges, has been registered at Sector-5 police station based on Preeti’s complaint. Neeraj, who works at a private hospital, is known to be addicted to alcohol and had a history of domestic violence, police added.
Preeti remains under treatment at the private hospital, while the police continue to investigate the case to determine the exact motive behind the assault.
