Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly shot dead by her father and 15-year-old brother in a suspected case of ‘honour’ killing in Shamli district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on September 29.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening (September 28) at Ambehta village under Kandhla police station limits.

The victim, identified as Muskan, a Class 12 student, was said to be in a relationship with a local boy, which her family strongly opposed.

According to Shamli Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Pratap Singh, Muskan’s father, Julfam, and her younger brother allegedly lured her to the terrace of their house on the pretext of chasing away monkeys. There, she was shot dead with a country-made pistol.

After the crime, the accused allegedly attempted to stage the murder as a suicide by placing the weapon beside her body and hiding her inside a room. However, during police questioning, the father confessed to killing his daughter, claiming that she had “tarnished the family’s honour.”

“The accused father has admitted to the crime, saying he killed his daughter because of her relationship with a local boy. Both he and the minor son have been arrested. The weapon used in the incident has also been recovered,” SP Singh told reporters.

The girl’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police said Julfam, a farmer by occupation, will be sent to jail, while his 15-year-old son will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and subsequently sent to a correction home.

Locals told police that Muskan’s father had caught her speaking on the phone on Sunday evening, which triggered the fatal attack.

An FIR has been registered against Julfam and his son under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
