Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 29-year-old construction worker who had recently returned from Dubai allegedly killed his wife and then died by suicide at their rented house on Ullal Main Road, Bengaluru, on Sunday September 28 evening.

The deceased have been identified as Dharmaseelan Ramesh (29), originally from Viluppuram, Tamil Nadu, and his wife Manju P (27), a nurse hailing from Kallakurichi district in Tamil Nadu.

Discovery of the Crime

The incident came to light around 9.30 pm when Manju’s father, Periyaswamy (53), who also works as a mason, returned from Tumakuru after a day’s labour with his nephew. Finding the door locked from inside and receiving no response, they obtained a spare key from the building owner. Inside, they discovered Manju lying in a pool of blood on the bed with grievous injuries, while Dharmaseelan was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a nylon rope.

Police said the crime likely occurred in the afternoon hours.

Sequence of Events

According to investigators, Manju had suffered over 40 stab wounds in addition to a slit throat. Some injuries appeared to have been inflicted post-mortem. Initial reports suggested strangulation, but forensic examination confirmed stabbing as the primary cause of death.

The couple had married in September 2022 and had no children. After the wedding, they lived together in Ramesh’s hometown in Tamil Nadu for a year before he left for Dubai in search of work. Meanwhile, Manju moved to Bengaluru, where she worked as a nurse at two private hospitals while living with her father.

Ramesh returned from Dubai about a month ago. Manju briefly stayed with him in Tamil Nadu for two weeks before returning to Bengaluru to resume work. Three days before the tragedy, Ramesh had called his father-in-law expressing his desire to move to Bengaluru for employment, a request to which the family agreed.

Possible Motive

While the exact motive remains under investigation, preliminary inquiries suggest that suspicions of infidelity may have triggered the violent act. Relatives said Dharmaseelan often accused Manju of being “too friendly” with her male colleagues.

Police, however, have not ruled out other domestic disputes and are recording statements from neighbours, relatives, and colleagues.

Police Statement

A senior police officer said: “The incident occurred between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm on Sunday. The motive remains unclear, though we are probing angles of domestic discord and suspicion. Forensic reports will give us more clarity.”

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and a case of murder and unnatural death has been registered at Byatarayanapura police station.
