Man kills wife, mother-in-law over birthday celebration expenses

New Delhi, INDIA: In a shocking incident of domestic violence, a 37-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and mother-in-law following a quarrel over birthday celebration expenses in Delhi’s Rohini Sector 17 on Saturday August 30. 

The accused, identified as Yogesh Sehgal, has been arrested by the police.

According to police officials, a PCR call was received around 3:50 pm at the KNK Marg police station, reporting that two women had been murdered in a flat in Sector-17, Rohini. When a police team reached the third-floor apartment, they discovered the blood-soaked bodies of Priya Sehgal (34) and her mother Kusum Sinha (63) lying in a room. Both women had sustained multiple stab injuries.

During the search of the residence, investigators recovered blood-stained clothes and a pair of scissors, suspected to have been the murder weapon. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic and crime teams examined the scene.

Family’s Allegations

The victims’ family members directly accused Yogesh of the killings. Priya’s brother Megh Sinha, who first discovered the crime, told reporters:

“When I couldn’t contact my mother or sister, I went to their house. The flat was locked from outside, and I noticed bloodstains near the door. We broke the lock and went in. Inside, we saw my mother and sister lying in pools of blood. My brother-in-law did this. He has even fled with the children.”

Another brother, Himalaya Sinha, recounted how their mother had gone to Priya’s house for her grandson’s birthday but had expressed concerns about quarrels over the expenses and gifts.

“My mother called us and said there was a fight between my sister and Yogesh regarding the birthday celebration. She decided to stay back to help resolve it. But the next day, when we kept trying to reach her, both she and Priya didn’t respond. By afternoon, when we went to check, we saw the horror inside the house. It is beyond inhuman.”

Years of Domestic Discord

Family members further alleged that Priya had been facing harassment at the hands of her husband for years. According to Megh, multiple complaints had been filed with the police in the past. On several occasions, Priya had even stayed with her family, but compromises were made for the sake of the children and family reputation.

Police Investigation

Police sources confirmed that Yogesh Sehgal, presently unemployed, had been taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests that the murders stemmed from a domestic dispute related to birthday expenses and gifts during a family function on August 28.

Senior police officers stated that Kusum had stayed with her daughter after the birthday celebration to help resolve the ongoing dispute. On Saturday afternoon, Yogesh allegedly attacked both women in a fit of rage, killing them before fleeing the flat with his two children.

The children were later found safe but reportedly traumatised. They are currently in the care of relatives.

Police said that teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the Crime Team have collected evidence from the scene. Further investigation is underway, including interrogation of the accused and verification of the family’s harassment allegations.
