Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 42-year-old woman was critically injured after being attacked with an axe by her late daughter’s boyfriend in Lucknow’s Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) area on Saturday August 9.

Police said the accused, identified as Vineet alias Golu Rawat, attacked the victim to avenge his girlfriend’s suicide.

The incident took place in Kathwara village when the victim, Anju Gautam of Bagaha village in Itaunja, was returning from her parental home with her son Mohit after Raksha Bandhan celebrations. Near Kandaila culvert on Kathwara–Shivpuri Road, Vineet allegedly waylaid them and struck Anju multiple times with an axe.

Mohit sustained injuries while trying to protect his mother. Villagers informed the police, who rushed the injured to Ram Sagar Mishra Joint Hospital. Anju was later referred to Balrampur Hospital due to her critical condition, while Mohit was discharged on Sunday.

According to police, Vineet had been in a relationship with Anju’s daughter Mohini. About six weeks ago, Mohini allegedly died by suicide after being scolded by family members over the affair. Holding Anju responsible, Vineet allegedly carried out the attack.

“Efforts are on to arrest the accused, who fled the scene after the assault,” said SK Singh, Station House Officer, BKT police station
