Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, INDIA: A woman forest officer in Kerala has captured the internet’s admiration after a video of her rescuing a massive King Cobra from a stream near Peppara in Thiruvananthapuram went viral. The daring rescue, led by Beat Forest Officer G S Roshni, showcased exceptional courage and calmness as she handled the venomous reptile with remarkable skill.

The incident occurred after local residents alerted the Kerala Forest Department about the presence of a large snake near a stream frequently used for bathing. Responding swiftly, a five-member Rapid Response Team from the Paruthipalli Range, led by Officer Roshni, arrived at the site.

Despite it being her first experience handling a King Cobra—the world’s longest venomous snake—Roshni remained composed. Using a hooked pole and a large sack, she carefully approached the snake, which measured between 14 to 15 feet and weighed approximately 20 kilograms. The video of the rescue, which has now gone viral, shows Roshni expertly maneuvering the snake-catching stick, gently lifting the cobra by its tail, and calmly coaxing it into the bag—at one point even heard saying “please” to the reptile.

The entire operation was completed within six minutes, after which the snake was safely released deep into the forest, away from human habitation.

Roshni, who has been with the Kerala Forest Department for nearly eight years, has previously rescued more than 800 snakes, both venomous and non-venomous. However, this marked her first encounter with a King Cobra—an experience she described as particularly significant, given the rarity of such sightings in the area.

The rescue has sparked a wave of appreciation on social media, with users hailing Roshni's bravery and professionalism. “Brave, skilled and calm under pressure. Salute to FO Roshni and the entire Rapid Response Team,” one user wrote. Another noted, “It’s unfortunate that such bravery often goes unnoticed in India. Officer Roshni’s rescue is a prime example of unsung heroism that deserves recognition and support.” One user wrote, "Queen handling king, such an inspiration she is. Fulfilling her duties no matter what.”

The clip has also reignited public appreciation for women serving in high-risk roles within forest departments, often in remote and challenging terrains. Many praised Roshni not just for her technical skill, but also for the composure and empathy she displayed during the rescue.

As the video continues to circulate widely, Roshni’s poised handling of the King Cobra stands as a powerful reminder of the dedication and courage of frontline wildlife officers safeguarding both people and nature
