New Delhi, INDIA: A woman and her teenage son were found murdered inside their locked apartment in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar-I on Wednesday 2 July 2025 night. Police said the accused, a 24-year-old domestic helper, was arrested the next day on Thursday 3 July while fleeing the city.
The victims, identified as Ruchika Sewani (42) and her son Krish Sewani (14), were discovered by police after a PCR call was received around 9:43 pm from Ruchika’s husband, Kuldeep Sewani (44). He told police that his wife and son were not responding to his calls and that he had seen blood stains on the stairs and at the main gate.
Police officers from Amar Colony Police Station rushed to the scene and forced open the locked gate. Inside, they found Ruchika’s body in the master bedroom, placed between a bed and a plastic stool. Following a trail of blood, officers found Krish’s body inside the bathroom. Both victims had deep neck injuries, suspected to have been caused by a sharp weapon.
The accused, identified as Mukesh (24), was employed as a driver and helper at the Sewani family's garment shop in Lajpat Nagar market. Police said Mukesh, originally from Hajipur, Bihar, had been residing in Amar Colony.
“CCTV footage showed Mukesh leaving the crime scene and heading towards Amar Colony. A manhunt was launched immediately,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari.
Mukesh was apprehended by Uttar Pradesh Police early Thursday 3 July 2025 morning while attempting to flee via train. He was caught at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU).
During interrogation, Mukesh allegedly confessed to the murders, saying he acted “in a fit of rage” after Ruchika scolded him over work-related issues shortly before the attack.
Police said a preliminary forensic examination indicates the injuries were caused by a sharp-edged weapon, and the crime appears to have been premeditated.
Ruchika and her husband jointly ran a garment store in the busy Lajpat Nagar market. Their son Krish was a Class 10 student.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are probing the motive, including whether the attack was spontaneous or planned.
More details are awaited as forensic and digital evidence is being analyzed
