Mumbai, Maharashtra, INDIA: In a shocking turn of events, the death of a 15-year-old girl, initially believed to be a suicide, has now been confirmed as a case of murder. Mumbai Police have apprehended a 16-year-old boy for allegedly pushing the girl from the terrace of a 32-storey building in Bhandup (West) in Mumbai on June 24, following an argument.
The deceased, a resident of Mulund East and a student at an international school, had reportedly gone to meet the accused -- a former schoolmate -- at a housing society in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. According to investigators, the two had been friends and had recently cleared their Class 10 board examinations. Their interaction turned fatal after a disagreement escalated into violence on the building’s terrace.
Suspicious Circumstances Lead to Investigation
The incident took place around 6 pm on June 24. The duo was seen on CCTV entering the building and heading to the 32nd floor, later walking up to the terrace area. Minutes afterward, the girl was found critically injured in the duct area near the D-wing of the society. She was rushed to Mulund General Hospital, where she was declared dead later that evening.
Initially, the boy claimed that the girl had taken her own life due to academic pressure. He told police he had tried to counsel her before leaving the area, unaware of what happened afterward. However, inconsistencies in his statement, his suspicious behavior, and key evidence prompted a deeper probe.
Evidence Contradicts Suicide Theory
Several red flags surfaced during the investigation:
CCTV footage showed the accused leaving the terrace alone, going down to the 30th floor, and then visiting the building’s gym. Notably, he appeared calm and did not raise any alarm or seek help.
The victim’s mobile phone was found near the E-wing, far from the D-wing where her body was discovered. Police suspect the boy threw the phone to mislead the investigation.
A resident of a top-floor flat reported hearing a loud argument before the incident and saw the boy immediately afterward. He allegedly lied to her, claiming he was there to meet another friend
