Kolkata, West Bengal, INDIA: In a gruesome incident that has sent waves of horror across India, a man in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district beheaded his sister-in-law and roamed the streets carrying her severed head before surrendering to the police.
The accused, identified as Bimal Mondal, reportedly attacked his brother's wife, Sati Mondal, with a sharp weapon in the early hours of Saturday May 31. The incident took place in Bharatgarh, under the jurisdiction of Basanti police station, on the outskirts of Kolkata.
Eyewitnesses told police that Mondal was seen walking through the locality in broad daylight, holding the blood-soaked weapon in one hand and the severed head in the other. Panic gripped the area as terrified residents refrained from intervening. At one point, he reportedly stopped near a local temple, brandishing the weapon as if celebrating the act.
According to initial police reports, the attack was allegedly triggered by a dispute over plucking mangoes from a tree. However, investigators suspect deeper family tensions may have played a role. "While the immediate provocation appears trivial, we are exploring longstanding family disputes as the possible motive behind this gruesome act," a senior officer involved in the investigation told reporters.
After parading the severed head publicly, Mondal voluntarily approached the local police station and surrendered. Authorities took him into custody and recovered the weapon used in the attack.
"His demeanour at the station was disturbingly calm. He showed no signs of remorse," police said. Officers noted that Mondal exhibited signs of psychological instability, prompting plans for a comprehensive mental health evaluation.
Local witnesses also reported that Mondal was shouting angrily about past injustices he claimed to have suffered at the hands of his brother and sister-in-law.
The police have launched a formal investigation, including psychological assessment and background inquiries, to establish the full context behind the killing.
