Baliguda, Odisha, INDIA: Police in eastern India have arrested three men accused of abducting and gang-raping a young woman over a six-day period in Baliguda, a town in Kandhamal district of Odisha state.
The incident reportedly occurred on May 11, when the woman, a local resident, travelled to the Baliguda market to buy medicine. While waiting near Triveni Park for public transport, she was approached by an auto-rickshaw driver who offered to take her home.
Instead of driving her to her village, the driver allegedly took her to a rented house in Baliguda, locked her inside, and sexually assaulted her. Two of his associates later joined him and the three men allegedly gang-raped her repeatedly over the next six days.
Police said the woman was rescued on May 17 after local residents grew suspicious upon hearing her screams and alerted authorities. A police team, led by Inspector-in-Charge Sambit Kumar Swain and acting on instructions from Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ramendra Prasad, raided the property and freed the survivor.
She was immediately taken to Baliguda Hospital for medical treatment and is currently in stable condition, according to police.
All three suspects have been arrested and presented in court. Authorities have registered charges under relevant sections of law related to abduction and gang rape. The vehicle used in the abduction has also been seized.
“This is a heinous crime. No one involved in violence against women will be spared,” SDPO Ramendra Prasad said during a press briefing.
