Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, INDIA: A 19-year-old boy was allegedly murdered by his elder brother in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh following a heated dispute over a pair of jeans. The incident took place in the Bihari Mohalla area of Bhopal’s Arera Hills locality in the early hours of Monday, May 26, 2025.
According to police, the accused, identified as 22-year-old Omkar Giri, used a kitchen knife to slit the throat of his younger brother, Vivek Giri, while he was asleep next to their father. Authorities stated that the altercation began when Omkar wore Vivek’s newly purchased jeans without permission, triggering an argument that escalated into physical violence.
“After the initial scuffle, Omkar left the house but returned sometime between 12:30 am and 1:00 am, and attacked Vivek while he was sleeping,” said Sub-Inspector Rajesh Tiwari, who is leading the investigation.
The police apprehended Omkar later at Bhopal railway station. Preliminary inquiries revealed that both brothers worked as part-time waiters at weddings and events. Their mother passed away during their childhood, and they were being raised by their father.
Officials also disclosed that the brothers had a history of frequent disputes and criminal records. Vivek had two previous cases filed against him, while Omkar had been involved in four.
The case has shocked residents of the area due to the trivial cause of the conflict and the brutal manner in which it was carried out. An investigation is ongoing.
