New Delhi – In a swift breakthrough, Delhi Police have arrested five suspects, including three minors, in connection with the murder of a young man in Seelampur, a densely populated neighbourhood in the northeast of India’s capital.
The incident occurred late on May 16, when a patrolling officer discovered the victim lying in a pool of blood inside Central Park, Seelampur. The man, later identified as Rehan alias "Seelampuriya", a resident of Maujpur, was found between a bench and pathway with severe injuries. He was rushed to JPC Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities quickly registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita—the newly implemented Indian penal code—at Seelampur police station. Forensic and crime scene units were promptly deployed to collect evidence.
Under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast District) Hareshwar V. Swami, the investigation progressed rapidly. By the following day, two adult suspects—identified as Faiz alias Alli (23) and Rahil alias Sahil (22)—alongside one minor, were taken into custody. Based on CCTV footage, local sources, and initial confessions, police subsequently arrested two more juveniles, aged between 15 and 17, from New Seelampur and Trilokpuri.
According to DCP Swami, all five suspects were known to police for past involvement in minor criminal activities and were affiliated with a local group. Tensions reportedly rose after the victim began associating with a rival faction. On the night of the murder, the group allegedly invited Rehan to the park under the pretext of resolving their dispute. When he resisted their confrontation, he was brutally attacked with bricks, stones, and a razor blade.
The suspects fled the scene, leaving Rehan critically injured. Police believe the attack was premeditated and are now investigating whether the group is linked to other recent crimes in the area.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, and the authorities have confirmed that formal charges will be filed in accordance with the new criminal code. Investigators are also assessing the broader network of affiliations within local youth gangs.
This case has raised renewed concerns over youth violence and gang rivalries in urban pockets of Delhi.
