Sitamarhi, Bihar, India | A shocking incident from Bihar’s Sitamarhi district has once again highlighted the grim consequences of violent debt disputes. A 50-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death over an unpaid amount of just ₹250 (approximately $3), leading to widespread outrage and protests by the victim’s family.
The incident took place in Saidpur village under the Saipur police jurisdiction. According to initial reports, the victim, identified as Dahaur Paswan, operated a small shop on rented land owned by a local man, Safiullah Khan. The monthly rent was ₹500, of which Paswan had already paid ₹250. The remaining balance became the subject of a fatal confrontation.
On Khan’s instructions, another local resident, Rambabu Paswan, was sent to collect the remaining amount. When Dahaur expressed his inability to pay the rest immediately, a verbal argument escalated into a brutal assault. Witnesses say Rambabu beat Dahaur with such ferocity that the latter collapsed on the spot.
He was initially rushed to the local Primary Health Centre (PHC), but due to deteriorating condition, he was referred to Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur. Despite efforts to save him, Dahaur succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
In a dramatic turn of events following his death, enraged family members and local residents carried the deceased’s body to the accused’s residence and staged a protest, demanding immediate justice. The situation grew tense, prompting police and forensic teams to rush to the scene. Law enforcement managed to bring the situation under control after hours of negotiation.
DSP Ram Krishan, speaking to the media, confirmed that preliminary investigations point to a violent altercation over a monetary dispute. “The exact cause of death will be determined after the post-mortem report, but it appears that the conflict was triggered by a ₹250 rent dispute,” he said.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and raised serious questions about local law enforcement and social tensions in rural Bihar. Authorities have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken once the autopsy results are confirmed.
