Balaghat (Madhya Pradesh, India): Three minor girls and a young woman from the tribal community were allegedly gang-raped by seven persons in Balaghat district, in the state of Madhya Pradesh, police said on April 25.

The incident occurred between 1:30 am and 2:00 am on April 23, when the victims were returning home after attending a marriage ceremony. The assault took place in a forested area under the jurisdiction of the Hatta police station.

Superintendent of Police Nagendra Singh said the accused, travelling on two motorcycles, intercepted the group, intimidated the boy accompanying the girls, chased him away, and committed the crime.

Fearing repercussions, the victims initially did not inform their families. The following day, villagers learned of the incident, after which a meeting of the tribal community was held and a police complaint was lodged.

Within three hours of the report being filed, police arrested all seven accused. They have been identified as Lokesh Mate (22), Lalchand Khare (28), Ajju Bagdate (21), Rajendra Kawre (20), Ajendra Bahe, Maniram Bahe, and one minor. The minor has been sent to a correctional home after being presented before a juvenile court.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Superintendent Singh stated that the case is being treated as a priority, given that the crime occurred in a Naxal-affected area. He added that efforts would be made to ensure the accused are given the strictest punishment within three to four months.
