BENGALURU, Karnataka, INDIA: A 28-year-old private company employee's swift reaction and alertness led to the immediate arrest of an autorickshaw driver accused of raping a 19-year-old woman near KR Puram railway station in the early hours of April 24, 2025. His prompt call to emergency services also enabled the police to capture a second suspect shortly afterward.

The attack occurred around 1:15 am when the victim, a migrant worker from Bihar employed in Kerala, had just arrived in Bengaluru and was seeking assistance from her cousin to catch a connecting train home. The two were walking near a college close to KR Puram railway station when they were confronted by two men, later identified as Asif Zameer Khan, 29, and Syed Mushar, 25 -- both autorickshaw drivers and residents of Mulabagal in Kolar district.

According to the police, the assailants forcibly separated the woman from her cousin. While Asif dragged the woman behind an under-construction Metro pillar, Mushar attempted to restrain the cousin, who managed to break free and flag down a passing motorcyclist — Ayub Bagh, a KR Puram resident.

Realizing the urgency of the situation, Bagh sped away with the cousin on his bike and immediately dialed 112, the police emergency response number at 1:26 am. Within minutes, police officers Revappa Adavi and Shiva Reddy arrived at the scene, followed by a Hoysala patrol team. They rushed toward the Metro pillar, apprehending Asif at the scene while Mushar fled.

The woman and her cousin were taken to a nearby private hospital for medical attention. A coordinated search led by assistant sub-inspector Shivananda and sub-inspector Nagaraj resulted in Mushar’s arrest within an hour.

Police later revealed that the accused had a pattern of traveling from Kolar to Bengaluru, spending a day or two in the city before returning. Both men reportedly drove autos, one owned, the other rented.

DCP (Whitefield Division) Shivakumar Gunare commended Bagh’s presence of mind and assured he would be recognized for his public-spirited act. “Had he not intervened, the crime could have escalated. His quick thinking helped us avert a worse tragedy,” Gunare stated.

Police continue to investigate the case under charges of rape, assault, and criminal conspiracy.
