Partner held in brutal murder of transgender person

Anakapalli, India – Police in Andhra Pradesh state of India have arrested a 23-year-old man for the brutal murder and dismemberment of his transgender partner. The accused, identified as Bandi Durga Prasad alias Bunny, was taken into custody near Visannapeta village in Anakapalli district on March 21.

Who is involved?

The victim has been identified as Deepu alias Dileep Kumar (35), a transgender individual. The accused, Bunny, had reportedly been in a live-in relationship with the victim for four years. Police believe personal conflicts, including suspicions about Deepu’s fidelity and Bunny’s plans to marry another woman, may have been motives for the crime.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Tuhin Sinha, Bunny allegedly strangled Deepu to death using a cloth at approximately 2:30 p.m. on March 18. Following the murder, he dismembered the body in a washroom and placed the parts in different bags before disposing of them in various locations across the district.

The first body parts were discovered under a bridge in Bayyavaram village after a Village Revenue Officer (VRO) alerted authorities. Police later recovered additional remains from two other locations—Anakapalli and Thallapalem. The victim was identified through gold-colored bangles, toe rings, and a tattoo.

How was the case solved?

Anakapalli police formed eight special investigation teams, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer M. Sravani. Using CCTV footage, mobile tower data, and forensic evidence, the teams were able to track and apprehend Bunny within 24 hours of launching their investigation.

Authorities recovered all body parts, along with crucial evidence, including mobile phones, the victim’s jewellery, and a money purse. SP Sinha emphasized that while Bunny is currently the sole suspect, further investigation will determine if others were involved.

Why did the crime occur?

Initial findings suggest Bunny harboured suspicions about Deepu’s fidelity. Additionally, he had plans to marry a woman, which reportedly led to disputes between the two. A conflict over jewellery is also being investigated as a potential trigger for the crime.

Authorities have assured the transgender community that stringent action will be taken to ensure justice. SP Sinha commended the swift action of the police teams and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting all citizens.
