Man arrested for killing wife, burning her body to destroy evidence

South 24 Parganas, India – A gruesome crime has shocked the residents of Budha village in Falta, in the Indian state of West Bengal, after police recovered the charred remains of a woman who was allegedly murdered by her husband. Authorities arrested the accused, Golam Ali Sheikh, in Diamond Harbour following an intensive investigation linking him to the crime.

 

Incident Details 

According to police reports, the murder took place on the night of March 4, 2025. The victim, who had been living separately from her husband for the past 18 months due to ongoing domestic disputes, was allegedly lured by Sheikh under the pretext of buying Eid gifts. That evening, he picked her up from the Bakhrahati area on his motorcycle. Later that night, he is accused of brutally assaulting and murdering her before setting her body on fire in a field in Budha village, Falta.

 

Two days later, on March 6, 2025, local residents discovered a pile of burning hay with human remains inside. The victim’s family identified her body based on remnants of her clothing, a silver chain around her neck, and her footwear recovered at the crime scene.

 

Suspicion and Arrest

Sheikh, a tailor by profession, worked in his father-in-law’s locality and became a prime suspect after the victim’s father attempted to contact her and received an abusive response from him. Enraged, local residents confronted Sheikh, assaulted him, and later reported the incident to the Falta police station.

 

Following a detailed investigation led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar Dey, officers arrested Sheikh on March 8, 2025. Authorities confirmed that forensic teams have been deployed to examine the crime scene, and further evidence is being collected.

 

Community Outrage and Investigation

The brutal murder has reignited concerns over domestic violence and crimes against women in the region. The victim’s family and local residents are demanding strict legal action and expedited judicial proceedings. Meanwhile, authorities are investigating whether any other individuals were involved in the crime.

 

The case remains under active investigation as police work to gather additional evidence and determine the exact motive behind the killing.
