New Delhi, India – Advanced Israeli facial recognition technology has played a pivotal role in helping Delhi Police solve a high-profile armed robbery case, resulting in the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of nearly the entire stolen sum of ₹80 lakh, officials confirmed on March 19.The suspects, identified as Mohammed Ali (21) and Samir (19), allegedly robbed a trader’s employee at gunpoint in Chandni Chowk on March 17. According to police reports, the perpetrators fired a warning shot before fleeing with the cash.
During the investigation, law enforcement officials analyzed footage from nearly 500 CCTV cameras installed in key locations, including Chandni Chowk, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Daryaganj, and Lahori Gate. The breakthrough came when Israeli-developed facial recognition software identified Ali, linking him to a previous criminal case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said.
The robbery occurred on March 17 when Ajmal Bhai Ganesh (49), an employee of R K Enterprises and a resident of Patan, Gujarat, collected ₹80 lakh from the Kucha Ghasiram area around 7 PM. As he made his way toward his residence in Fatehpuri, an armed individual attempted to snatch his bag. When Ganesh resisted, the suspect fired a warning shot before seizing the cash and escaping.
Surveillance footage showed a suspect in a blue shirt and cap following the victim and later fleeing toward Fatehpuri Masjid. Another individual was seen escaping on a Scooty toward Lal Qila.
Ali, a resident of Daryaganj, was arrested shortly after and provided information on his accomplice, Samir, leading to his capture. A raid at Samir’s residence resulted in the recovery of ₹79.5 lakh in cash, a semi-automatic pistol with three bullets, and other incriminating evidence.
Authorities revealed that Ali had prior knowledge of cash transactions in the Kucha Ghasiram area and had conducted reconnaissance before selecting the target. "While Ali identified the victim, Samir executed the robbery," said DCP Banthia.
Both suspects have been charged under relevant sections of the law and remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
