Doctors save man pierced in a freak accident by 5-feet long rod through the neck

    Sagaya Fernando Mumbai: 6 November 22   A team of doctors at Apollo Multispecialty hospital in Triuchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India, saved the life of a 33-years-old man whose neck was pierced through by a feet long iron rod.   Karthikeyan, a resident of Ariyamangalam in the city, was watering the concrete slabs on the first floor of his under-construction house when he accidentally slipped and fell 15 to 20 feet down, on October 15. As he fell, a 5 feet long iron rod with serrated edges pierced through his neck and came out from the back.   “Within fifteen minutes of the mishap, his relatives rushed him to our hospital which is in close vicinity,” informed Apollo Multispecialty Hospital, Triuchirappalli, Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon Dr Mohamed Mansoor, who led the operating team.   “On evaluation in emergency, it was seen that he had a 5 feet long iron rod penetrating into the anterior aspect of neck and exiting the posterior aspect of neck.

Even as the state of Kerala in India is reeling under the after-effects of torrential rainfall and flooding which has claimed many lives, a head-on collision between a state public transport bus and a goods lorry on August 13, added to the sad turn of tragic events in the state.

In this mishap, three people – the diver and conductor of the bus, and the lorry driver – were killed, while 30 passengers on the bus sustained minor injuries.

The tragic incident has been caught on the CCTV of a shop located near the accident site under Chathannur police jurisdiction of Kollam city.

The Kerala Road Transport Corporation (KRTC) bus was headed to Thiruvananthapuram – the state capital, while the lorry was going to Ernakulam.

“The incident took place a few minutes after 6 in the morning after the bus had crossed the bridge on the Ithikkara River. The CCTV footage from a nearby shop shows the bus suddenly crossing onto the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the lorry. Three people died in this accident. They are the truck driver Ganesh, KRTC bus driver Abdul Azeez and the bus conductor T P Subhash,” informed Chathannur Assistant Commissioner Hiralal. 

Luckily, the 30 passengers on the bus had a narrow escape, sustaining minor injuries, and were rushed to the Kollam District Hospital, Kottiyam Holy Cross Hospital and KIMS Hospital for treatment and discharged later.

The police surmise that the bus driver dozed off on the wheel leading to the mishap.
