Twins conjoined at abdomen born in Odisha, India

Story by Sagaya Fernando

Even as two year old twins Jaga and Kalia conjoined at the head born in the state of Odisha in India were surgically separated recently and are on their way to recovery as two distinct individuals, another woman in the same state has given birth to twins conjoined at the abdomen on December 1.

The mother, 22-year-old Sumitra Dutta of Khalipatna village under Sarankula police limits in the district was admitted to a private hospital in Nayagarh on December 1 morning following labour pain. The babies were born at around 8 pm.

Following the delivery, a huge crowd gathered outside the clinic to see the conjoined girls joined at stomach.

As the private hospital was not equipped for handling such a case, the babies were shifted to the District Government Hospital and kept in the intensive care unit and later on were further shifted to Sishu Bhawan – a paediatric hospital run by the state government in Cuttack for better treatment as their condition was precarious.

The mother and twins are said to be critical.

The father of the conjoined twins, Kishore Kumar Dutta  has sought government assistance that was made in case of Jaga-Kalia for surgery.

“The doctors are looking after the baby girls since they have been admitted here. The condition of one is said to be serious. I am hoping for the best,” said the father.

Kishore works as a security guard at a private firm and with his meager earnings cannot afford the operation cost that entails the separation of his conjoined twin girls.

Doctors in India remove world’s heaviest Ovarian tumour Sagaya Fernando Mumbai: 24 October 2018-10-24 It was a quirk of fate that brought 46-years-old Vasantha – a farm hand with a massive abdominal swelling from the hill station of Ooty in Tamil Nadu, India – to doctors 85 kilometers downhill at Coimbatore who diagnosed it to be a gigantic ovarian tumour. “The patient’s abdomen started to swell gradually over a period of two years and started looking like as if she was pregnant with at least quadruplets. In the meantime, her daughter was to get engaged. Afraid of facing the people who would question her about the swollen abdomen and make snide remarks, she along with her husband Pokkisam approached a local doctor at Ooty, who diagnosed her of having a huge tumour and said that her chances of survival are slim even after a surgery. Hearing this, her spouse got disturbed. And, in a state of disturbed mind one day Pokkisam boarded a wrong bus home. A co-passenger who saw
