Man arrested for killing transgender person over ₹200

Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 27-year-old transgender woman during a robbery near the Majestic bus station in central Bengaluru in the early hours of Saturday, August 22, police said.

The deceased, identified as Devi, was allegedly attacked after she resisted the accused’s demand for ₹200. Police identified the arrested accused as Gautham, a resident of Ramamurthy Nagar in Bengaluru.

According to Yatish N., Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru West Division, the incident occurred between 2.30 am and 3 am within the jurisdiction of Upparpet Police Station, near the BMTC terminal at Majestic.

Police said Gautham had allegedly consumed alcohol before reaching the Majestic area on a two-wheeler with the intention of committing a robbery. Investigators are examining whether he had been involved in similar offences in the past.

During the early hours, Gautham allegedly approached Devi and demanded ₹200. When she refused to hand over the money and resisted the alleged robbery attempt, he attacked her, police said.

The accused allegedly struck Devi on the head with a dagger before snatching her purse and mobile phone. He then allegedly stabbed her multiple times and fled the spot on his two-wheeler.

Seriously injured, Devi collapsed at the scene. She died shortly afterwards due to the injuries sustained in the attack, according to police.

The incident was subsequently reported to Upparpet Police Station by one of Devi’s associates who was reportedly present nearby at the time. Based on the complaint, police registered a murder case and launched an investigation.

Police teams examined available information and CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of efforts to identify and trace the assailant. The investigation eventually led officers to Gautham in the Ramamurthy Nagar area, where he was apprehended.

During questioning, the accused allegedly admitted his involvement in the attack and told investigators that he had been under the influence of alcohol and had gone to Majestic intending to commit a robbery, police said. 

Investigators are also examining the exact sequence of events before and after the killing, including the accused’s movements and the route he allegedly used to escape from the scene.

Police are further verifying Gautham’s criminal background and whether he was previously involved in robberies or other offences, particularly incidents targeting people in public places during late-night and early-morning hours.

The Majestic area, which includes the Kempegowda Bus Station and surrounding transport facilities, remains busy for much of the day and night because of the movement of intercity passengers and commuters.

Upparpet police are continuing the investigation and are collecting CCTV footage, witness statements and other evidence connected with the alleged robbery and killing.
