Agra, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 63-year-old woman is battling for her life after her son allegedly poisoned her food following an alleged instruction from his mother-in-law, who reportedly told him to "remove his mother from the way" if he wanted his estranged wife to return home.
The incident took place on July 9 in Barpura village under the Pidhaura police station area of Agra district. Police have arrested the accused son, Ravindra, while his mother-in-law, Phoolwati, remains absconding.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim, Ram Murti, was allegedly served a dish of chole (chickpeas) laced with poison by her son at around 3 pm. Shortly after consuming the food, she developed severe health complications and was rushed to hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Police said Ravindra had been involved in a long-running land dispute with his younger brother, Mukesh, which had strained relations within the family. Following the dispute, his wife left their matrimonial home and began living with her parents.
Investigators said Ravindra visited his in-laws' home on July 9 in an attempt to persuade his wife to return. During the meeting, his mother-in-law, Phoolwati, allegedly told him that her daughter would return only if he "got rid of" his mother.
According to the complaint, Phoolwati allegedly handed Ravindra a packet containing poison and instructed him to mix it into his mother's food. These allegations form part of the FIR and are currently under police investigation.
The complaint was lodged by the victim's husband, Ranveer Singh, who alleged that Ravindra later admitted the poison had been supplied by his mother-in-law.
The accused's brother, Mukesh, also claimed the family had recently been embroiled in a dispute over agricultural land and alleged that Ravindra poisoned their mother after agreeing to his mother-in-law's condition. Police said these claims are also being verified as part of the investigation.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rajeev Ranjan confirmed Ravindra's arrest.
"The accused son, Ravindra, has been arrested for allegedly poisoning his mother. The mother-in-law, Phoolwati, is absconding, and police teams are conducting raids to apprehend her," the ACP said.
Police have registered a case against Ravindra and Phoolwati under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 61, 109 and 123, and said further legal action will depend on the victim's medical condition, forensic examination, and other evidence collected during the investigation.
Authorities emphasised that the allegations against the accused are based on the FIR and witness statements, and the final conclusions will depend on the outcome of the police investigation, forensic findings, and judicial proceedings.
