Bagalkot, Karnataka, INDIA: A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his wife after suspecting her of having an extramarital affair, police said. Investigators allege the accused recorded a video of the victim's final moments, shared it with relatives and friends, and video-called her parents, forcing them to witness their daughter's last moments.
The victim, identified as Bhagyashree Jigalur, 23, was found dead at the couple's residence in Galagali village, Bilagi taluk, Bagalkot district, on Monday July 27 evening. The accused, Praveen Ashok Jigalur, has been booked for murder based on a complaint lodged by Bhagyashree's father.
According to police, Bhagyashree had returned to her matrimonial home earlier that day after spending nearly one-and-a-half to two months at her parents' house due to repeated marital disputes. Investigators said Praveen had persuaded her to return after assuring her they would reconcile and live together peacefully.
However, police allege that later the same evening, Praveen assaulted Bhagyashree before hanging her inside their bedroom using a green dupatta.
Investigators said the accused allegedly filmed Bhagyashree while she was still struggling for life instead of attempting to rescue her. Police further alleged that he circulated the video among relatives, friends and acquaintances and also initiated a video call with her parents, forcing them to witness their daughter's final moments.
A video purportedly showing the incident has surfaced on social media. The footage appears to show Bhagyashree hanging by a green dupatta while struggling to stay alive, with the couple's names, written on the bedroom wall during their wedding celebrations, visible in the background. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
Bagalkot Superintendent of Police Siddharth Goyal said investigators are still establishing the exact sequence of events.
"There are blood injuries on the woman's body, and the accused appeared to harbour resentment towards her. Instead of attempting to save her, he recorded videos and immediately shared them with several people," Goyal told reporters.
Police said they are investigating whether Bhagyashree was assaulted before she was hanged or whether she died by hanging following the alleged assault. Officers have recovered videos allegedly stored on the victim's mobile phone, along with videos recorded by the accused after the incident.
Investigators also recovered an iron rod-like object from the house and collected it for forensic examination. Beer bottles were found at the scene, and police are examining whether the victim may have been made to consume alcohol before the incident. Her stomach contents have been preserved and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis, while the post-mortem examination is expected to clarify the nature of the injuries found on her neck and body.
According to police, the couple married in 2020 and have a three-year-old son. Investigators said Praveen worked as a driver and travelled frequently over the past two years. During that period, police suspect Bhagyashree developed a relationship with another man from the area where her parental home is located. Authorities stressed that this allegation forms part of the ongoing investigation and has not been established in court.
Police said the suspected affair allegedly led to repeated disputes between the couple. They are also examining Bhagyashree's previous complaints that her husband was not taking proper care of her.
The accused has been arrested, and police plan to seek his custody to examine the recovered videos, question witnesses, and further investigate the events leading up to the alleged murder. The investigation remains ongoing.
