Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 45-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Sunday April 12 after being brutally attacked by her nephew and his associates in Bengaluru, police said. Following her death, the case has been upgraded from attempt to murder to murder.

The deceased, identified as Mageshwari, was a resident of Adugodi. Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the incident — Manikiran, his father Manivannan, and their associates Maniraj alias Stephan and Abhishek. All the accused, who are daily-wage labourers, have been remanded to judicial custody at Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara.

According to the Adugodi police, the incident stemmed from a long-standing family dispute. Manikiran was married to Charulata, the granddaughter of Mageshwari’s elder sister. Due to marital discord, Charulata had returned to her parental home and was staying with her grandmother and Mageshwari.

Police said Manikiran had repeatedly attempted to persuade Charulata to return, but she refused. On the day of the incident, he allegedly arrived at Mageshwari’s residence along with his father and associates in an attempt to forcibly take her back.

When Mageshwari intervened, the group allegedly assaulted her with an iron rod before Manikiran and his associates stabbed her multiple times on the thigh. The accused then forcibly took Charulata with them and fled the scene.

Mageshwari was initially admitted to St John’s Hospital, where doctors had stated that she was out of danger. However, her family later shifted her to Victoria Hospital and subsequently to another medical facility due to financial constraints. Her condition deteriorated over the following days, and she died around 3 am on Sunday.

The Adugodi police have registered cases under charges of murder, attempt to murder, abduction, and domestic violence, and further investigation is underway.
