Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 19-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death with iron rods by her three brothers, including a minor, in a suspected case of honour killing in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district.
The incident took place late on Friday April 17 night in Bhawanipur Tola Amahiya village. Police said the accused brothers allegedly attacked their sister, identified as Sangeeta, after finding her with her boyfriend, Ravi Kumar Gupta, inside their house.
According to investigators, the main accused, Kamlesh, 25, had returned home late on Friday along with his mother. Upon entering the house, he allegedly found Sangeeta and Ravi Kumar Gupta, 22, in a compromising situation. Enraged, Kamlesh reportedly called his brothers, Amlesh, 23, and their 15-year-old sibling, who was nearby.
Police said the three brothers then allegedly locked the couple inside a room and assaulted them with iron rods. Sangeeta sustained severe injuries and died on the spot.
Ravi Kumar Gupta was also brutally attacked and left critically injured. Investigators said he somehow managed to escape from the house, but the accused allegedly chased him down, assaulted him again, and dumped him near his residence.
After regaining consciousness, Ravi informed his family about the attack. His relatives then alerted the police.
In an attempt to destroy evidence, the accused allegedly removed Sangeeta’s body from the village and partially burnt it.
Initially, police registered a case against the accused under Sections 115(2), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Ravi’s uncle, Sunil Gupta.
However, during the course of the investigation, police added more serious charges, including Section 103(1) of the BNS relating to murder.
Police officials said Sangeeta’s family initially provided misleading information regarding her whereabouts. During questioning, each of the brothers allegedly gave different versions of the events, which raised suspicion among investigators.
According to police, Kamlesh eventually broke down during interrogation and confessed to the crime.
Maharajganj Superintendent of Police Shakti Mohan Avasthy said Kamlesh and Amlesh have been sent to jail, while the minor accused has been sent to a juvenile home.
Police have recovered Sangeeta’s half-burnt body and sent it for post-mortem examination. Further investigation is underway.
