Tarn Taran, Punjab, INDIA: A tragic incident shook Punjab’s Tarn Taran district on Monday February 10 morning when a first-year law student allegedly shot dead his female classmate inside a classroom at Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village before attempting suicide.

The victim, identified as Sandeep Kaur (20), died on the spot after being shot in the head. The accused, Prince Raj Singh (20), who was studying in the same class, critically injured himself and later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital, police said.

According to preliminary investigations, Prince had been harassing Sandeep for several months and had proposed to her during Valentine Week on February 8. After she rejected him, he allegedly became resentful and continued pressuring her to marry him, despite repeated refusals.

Incident Caught on CCTV

The shooting occurred around 9.16 am, before classes had formally begun. CCTV footage from the classroom shows students seated casually and talking. Prince is seen approaching Sandeep, who was sitting on the back bench with a friend, and briefly speaking to her.

Moments later, he reportedly took out a pistol from his bag and fired at close range, killing her instantly. He then reloaded the weapon and shot himself. The entire sequence lasted barely three seconds, according to police officials.

Panic broke out as students fled the classroom. A shocked classmate attempted to help Sandeep but realised she had succumbed to her injuries. She rushed to alert college authorities as others scattered in fear.

Family Alleges Lapses

Sandeep’s mother, Harjinder Kaur, alleged that the family was initially misinformed by the college authorities. She said they were told that Sandeep had suffered a minor injury after an argument.

“When I reached the college, my daughter was already dead, lying in a pool of blood. She had been shot in the head,” she said, questioning the lack of transparency and security on campus.

Sandeep’s father had passed away earlier. She was one of seven siblings and had been working part-time with a lawyer while pursuing her studies. Family members said she aspired to become a judge.

Police Investigation Underway

Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Lamba said police are examining CCTV footage and recording statements of students and faculty members.

“All possible angles are being investigated. We are trying to determine how the accused procured the weapon and whether it was licensed,” he said.

Police are also probing whether the firearm belonged to Prince’s father, who serves in the Army, or if it was obtained illegally.

Questions Over Campus Security

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among parents and local residents. Many questioned how a student was able to enter a college classroom with a firearm without any security checks.

Allegations have also surfaced that the college gates remained closed for several minutes after the shooting, delaying access for parents and emergency responders.

Authorities have assured strict action if negligence is found.
