Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, INDIA: A 22-year-old migrant worker from Odisha was allegedly attacked and critically injured by her former boyfriend at the Tiruppur railway station after she introduced him to her new partner. The accused has been arrested, and the woman is undergoing intensive treatment at a government hospital.
Five-Year Relationship Ends in Violence
The accused, identified as Prakash Maji, is a native of Kabarkal in the Palangir district of Odisha. According to police, he and the victim were childhood friends from the same village, and their friendship developed into a romantic relationship that lasted nearly five years.
Both later migrated to Tamil Nadu for employment. Maji secured a job at a private firm in Karur district, while the woman found work at a garment manufacturing unit near Palladam in Tiruppur district, about 80 kilometres away.
Confrontation at Railway Station
Police sources said that the relationship had recently deteriorated after the woman reportedly began seeing another man. Upon learning about the new relationship, Maji allegedly decided to confront her and persuade her to return to their hometown.
On the day of the incident, he asked her to meet him at the Tiruppur railway station. However, the situation escalated when she arrived accompanied by her new boyfriend. During the meeting, she reportedly introduced the man to Maji and told him she had chosen to move on.
Attack and Rescue
Enraged by the confrontation, Maji allegedly pulled out a blade he had concealed and attacked the woman in full public view. She collapsed at the scene with severe injuries.
The new boyfriend reportedly fled the spot immediately after the incident. Commuters and nearby residents rushed to assist the injured woman and transported her to a nearby government hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Arrest and Investigation
Railway police personnel present at the station apprehended Maji before he could escape. He has been taken into custody, and a case has been registered.
Police are recording statements from eyewitnesses and examining CCTV footage from the railway station as part of the ongoing investigation. Further inquiries are underway.
