Gurugram, Haryana, INDIA: In a shocking incident from Haryana, a 27-year-old bank employee was allegedly murdered by her husband just hours after the couple celebrated Valentine’s Day together. The accused, a chartered accountant, allegedly slit his wife’s throat and attempted to stage the crime as a robbery before being arrested within 18 hours of the incident.

The victim, Mahak (27), worked with HDFC Bank in Gurugram. She had married Anshul Dhawan, a resident of Hisar’s Sector 14, on September 25 last year in an arranged marriage. The couple had been married for barely five months. Family members have claimed that Mahak was pregnant at the time of her death.

Murder After Family Visit

On February 14, the couple spent Valentine’s Day with family members in Hisar. The following evening, February 15, they left Mahak’s parental home in Hansi for Gurugram.

Around 11 pm, Anshul called the police claiming that unidentified assailants had intercepted their car near Pahsaur village in the Badli area of Jhajjar district, attempted to rob them, and slit his wife’s throat before fleeing the scene.

Police found Mahak’s body lying outside the car on a dirt track approximately 100 metres off the Jhajjar-Badli road. Her throat had been slit.

Suspicion Mounts During Investigation

As investigators began probing the case, several discrepancies emerged in Anshul’s statements. According to police sources, he repeatedly changed his version of events and failed to provide a clear description of the alleged attackers. This raised suspicion among the officers.

During sustained questioning and reconstruction of the crime scene, Anshul allegedly confessed to the murder.

Alleged Motive: Suspicion and Frequent Arguments

Police said the couple frequently argued over Anshul’s suspicions regarding his wife’s character. Investigators believe that the argument intensified during the car ride on February 15.

According to the police, Anshul allegedly strangled Mahak inside the vehicle and later slit her throat using scissors. He is said to have worn gloves during the act to avoid leaving fingerprints. Investigators added that he then attempted to stage the scene to resemble a robbery-cum-murder.

Family’s Earlier Concerns

Mahak’s father, Krishna Kathuria, stated that he had harboured doubts about his son-in-law from the beginning. Following the confession, police arrested Anshul Dhawan as the prime accused in the case.

Further investigation is underway to establish all aspects of the crime, including the claim made by the victim’s family that she was pregnant at the time of her death.

The incident has sent shockwaves across Haryana, highlighting yet another case of domestic violence culminating in a brutal and premeditated killing.
