Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A 39-year-old woman was shot dead by her estranged husband on a busy road in west Bengaluru on Tuesday evening, December 23, in a shocking incident that triggered panic during peak-hour traffic. The accused later walked into a police station and surrendered with the weapon used in the crime.
The victim, Bhuvaneshwari, was an assistant manager at the Basaveshwaranagar branch of Union Bank of India. She was shot around 6.30 pm on 1st Main Road in the Rajajinagar Industrial Area as she was returning home from work.
Police identified the accused as Balamurugan (40), a software engineer by qualification who was previously employed with a private IT firm. He has reportedly been unemployed for the past four years.
According to the police, Balamurugan fired four rounds at close range. Two bullets struck Bhuvaneshwari on the head, while the remaining two hit her hand, causing fatal injuries. Passers-by and a Hoysala patrol rushed her to Shanbhog Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The sound of gunfire caused panic in the crowded area, with commuters and pedestrians running for cover.
Minutes after the shooting, Balamurugan walked into the Magadi Road police station, confessed to the crime and surrendered. The pistol used in the attack has been seized, and police are verifying its source, including whether it was licensed.
Both the victim and the accused are natives of Salem district in Tamil Nadu. They were married in 2011 and moved to Bengaluru in 2018 after Balamurugan joined a private software company. However, the couple had been living separately for over a year following prolonged marital disputes.
While Bhuvaneshwari lived in Rajajinagar with their two children—a 12-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter—Balamurugan was residing alone in the KP Agrahara area.
Police said the accused frequently suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship, leading to repeated arguments. About six months ago, Bhuvaneshwari had taken a transfer from the bank’s Whitefield branch to Basaveshwaranagar and shifted to a new residence with her children. Investigators said Balamurugan later traced her address and moved closer to her neighbourhood a few months ago.
A week before the incident, Bhuvaneshwari had sent a legal divorce notice to Balamurugan after seeking separation, which he reportedly opposed. The case was pending before a court.
On Tuesday, police said, Balamurugan allegedly waited along his wife’s route home, followed her and opened fire. He is currently in police custody, and further investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances of the crime and how the firearm was procured.
