Kolkata, West Bengal, INDIA: A violent domestic incident in central Kolkata’s Posta area on Tuesday December 16 morning left a 35-year-old man dead and a 28-year-old woman critically injured. Police said the man allegedly stabbed the woman multiple times before falling from a fourth-floor balcony of her residence.
The incident occurred around 8.15 am at a house on Shiv Thakur Lane, under the jurisdiction of Posta police station. The deceased has been identified as Rajendra (also known as Vicky) Sharma, a resident of Jagmohan Mullick Lane, while the injured woman is Shikha Singh.
According to police and local residents, Sharma entered Singh’s rented house while she was alone, as her two children had gone to school. An argument reportedly broke out between the two, following which Sharma allegedly attacked her with a knife. During the confrontation, he fell from the fourth-floor balcony onto the street below, reportedly with the knife still in his hand.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors declared Sharma dead on arrival, while Singh, who sustained multiple stab injuries, remains in critical condition.
Police said Singh’s husband had died two years ago, and she has since been supporting her family by doing sewing work. Locals claimed Sharma, who lived a few lanes away, had known Singh for several years and had been visiting her occasionally. In recent weeks, neighbours reportedly noticed tensions between the two, with Sharma allegedly making derogatory remarks about her.
Preliminary inquiries suggest the relationship had become strained over disagreements related to marriage. Sources indicated that Singh was pressing Sharma to marry her, while he was reluctant, allegedly citing instability in his personal and professional life. Frequent arguments were reported in the days leading up to the incident.
Police are investigating the exact sequence of events, including whether the fall was accidental or deliberate. Investigators are also examining Sharma’s mental state and any prior history of violence. A case has been registered, and further inquiry is underway.
