Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: A 30-year-old woman, wife of a serving Indian Navy chief petty officer, was found dead along the railway tracks between Samhon and Bharthana stations in Uttar Pradesh on November 26. Following a complaint by her family, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Etawah booked a Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The deceased, Arti Yadav, had mistakenly boarded the wrong train while travelling from Kanpur Central to New Delhi for a medical consultation at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral). She was scheduled to take the Barauni–New Delhi Clone Special (02563) but boarded the Patna–Anand Vihar Terminal Special Fare Special (04089) amid confusion caused by a 10-hour delay of her original train.
Incident in the Coach
According to the FIR filed by Arti’s father, the TTE, Santosh Kumar, confronted her in coach S-11 over her reserved ticket. Family members allege that Kumar threw Arti’s luggage out and pushed her off the moving train.
Her body was later recovered around 4 km from where her belongings were found.
Arti had recently returned to her parents’ home in Kanpur after visiting Mumbai, where her husband, Ajay Yadav, is posted. “She planned to visit the Army hospital in Delhi for consultation. My father was the first to receive the call about her death,” Ajay said. The couple married in February 2020. At the time of the incident, Ajay was undergoing training in Chennai.
Passengers Present Contradict Family Allegations
However, the Railways said at least five co-passengers have given written statements defending the TTE. According to their accounts, Arti jumped out of the train on her own after being asked to shift to the general coach.
“One of the passengers, Anchal Srivastava, who was on berth number 4, stated that Arti said she had a ticket for another train. When asked to move to the general coach, she replied that she would get down at the next station. When the TTE repeated his request, she said she would jump, took her bag, and leapt out of the train,” Railways officials said.
Another passenger, Raj Vaibhav Singh, said she threw her Aadhaar card towards the TTE before jumping. Three additional passengers gave similar accounts.
Family Sees Foul Play
Arti’s husband has rejected the co-passengers’ version. “The TTE pushed her out of the moving train. Her bag was found 4 km away from the body, and her mobile phone is missing. She had severe back injuries while the front had no marks. This shows foul play,” he said.
Ajay also questioned why she would travel nearly 130 km from Kanpur to Bharthana before allegedly jumping. “If she intended to commit suicide, why wait so long? She travelled alone from Mumbai to Kanpur recently without any issues,” he added.
He also claimed that one of the co-passengers had initially called railway helpline 139 complaining about the TTE’s behaviour but later changed his statement.
GRP Investigation Underway
GRP officials said the investigation is ongoing. “Prima facie, it appears the victim jumped off the train, but we are recording statements of co-passengers,” Circle Officer Etawah GRP Udai Pratap Singh said.
The TTE has been booked but not yet arrested as authorities continue to verify contradictory versions of the incident.
