Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: In a chilling rerun of the infamous blue drum murder case, a woman and her lover have been arrested in Meerut for allegedly killing her husband after he discovered their extramarital affair.

The accused, identified as Anjali and her lover Ajay, both residents of Agwanpur village, were arrested days after Anjali’s husband, Rahul, was found shot dead in a field on the outskirts of the village.

Initially, police suspected the murder to be a case of robbery gone wrong. However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when Anjali went missing soon after Rahul’s body was discovered.

“At first, robbery appeared to be the motive, but the missing wife changed everything,” an investigating officer said.

According to police, Rahul’s body bore three bullet wounds. While Anjali initially mourned his death along with her family, she later fled the village with Ajay, raising further suspicion. Both were subsequently traced and detained.

During interrogation, Ajay confessed to the crime, revealing that Anjali had planned the murder after Rahul confronted her about her affair. “Rahul became aware of their illicit relationship, and Anjali was so upset that she conspired to eliminate him,” said a senior officer, quoting Ajay’s statement.

Ajay allegedly lured Rahul to the fields under the pretext of a meeting and shot him three times, police said.

The gruesome killing comes close on the heels of another similar case from the district, in which a woman named Kajal, along with her lover, murdered her husband. Kajal reportedly sedated her husband and, with her lover’s help, took him on a motorcycle to a canal several kilometres away. There, they strangled him with her scarf and dumped his body into the water.

These cases add to a disturbing trend of spousal murders reported from Uttar Pradesh in recent months.

The latest case also evokes memories of the sensational “blue drum murder” from Meerut earlier this year. In March, Muskan Rastogi and her lover, Sahil Shukla, killed her husband, Saurabh Rajput, chopped the body into four pieces, and sealed it in a cement-filled drum before fleeing to Himachal Pradesh. Muskan later confessed to the crime before her family, who alerted the police.

Police say the recent spate of cases highlights a worrying pattern of domestic betrayal and violent retribution unfolding across the state.
