Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, INDIA: In a shocking incident of one-sided love turning deadly, a 23-year-old woman was brutally murdered in broad daylight on Tuesday November 11 in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district. The victim, identified as Ritu Bhandarkar, was attacked by Roshan Dharve, who slit her throat with a knife while she was waiting for a bus to go to work.
A chilling video of the incident has gone viral, showing the accused stabbing the young woman repeatedly as bystanders recorded the scene instead of intervening. In the video, Dharve can be heard shouting, “She was with me for five years. We were together for life and death. Now she’s betraying me. She and her brothers sent boys to kill me.” When a woman nearby asked him why he was attacking her, he coldly replied, “Her life will be saved. Call the police and take her away.”
As the woman collapsed on the road, bleeding profusely, the accused continued stabbing her and then wiped his blood-stained hands with her scarf, shocking onlookers.
According to the police, Bhandarkar worked at a furniture shop in Baihar town and commuted daily by bus from her village. She was waiting at the Amgaon Fata bus stop when Dharve arrived on a borrowed motorcycle. Witnesses said the two spoke briefly before an argument broke out, following which the accused pulled out a knife and attacked her multiple times.
Several villagers rushed to the spot and overpowered Dharve. He was badly beaten by locals and left half-conscious when the police arrived. The accused is currently hospitalised under police guard. Authorities have recovered the knife and both their mobile phones from the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim had recently stopped communicating with Dharve, which allegedly enraged him and led to the fatal attack.
As news of the murder spread, hundreds of villagers and the victim’s family gathered outside the Baihar Police Station, demanding swift justice. They have sought ₹1 crore compensation, a government job for one family member, demolition of the accused’s house, and the death penalty for Dharve.
The situation grew tense as public anger swelled, prompting the police to deploy additional forces to maintain order.
“The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the accused has been detained and is being interrogated. Every angle of the case is being investigated,” a police official said.
This horrifying incident has once again raised serious questions about the growing trend of violence over failed relationships and the bystander apathy seen in many such crimes.
