Kolkata, West Bengal, INDIA: A 33-year-old chartered accountant, Adarsh Losalka, was found murdered and unclothed in a Kasba hotel room on Saturday (November 22). Police have arrested a live-in couple — Komal Saha and Dhruba Mitra — for allegedly luring him through a dating app, attempting to extort money, and ultimately killing him when he refused to pay.
Dating App Trap Turned Fatal
According to investigators, Losalka had connected with Komal on a dating app, where the two had agreed on a payment of ₹2,000 for sexual services. However, once inside the hotel, the couple allegedly tried to extort ₹20,000 from him.
“The accused have been changing their statements since the arrest,” a senior officer said.
Sequence of Events Inside the Hotel
Police reconstruction and CCTV footage reveal the following timeline:
Losalka checked into the Kasba hotel at 9:30 pm on November 21, booking two rooms.
Komal and Dhruba checked into the second room, also booked by Losalka.
Ten minutes later, Komal entered Losalka’s room.
Beer ordered through a delivery app was brought to the room, and CCTV captured Losalka briefly stepping out to collect snacks.
Komal and Dhruba were later seen talking at length in the corridor—believed to be when they discussed the extortion plan.
As Losalka consumed alcohol and became heavily intoxicated, Komal allegedly called Dhruba into the room.
Investigators said the couple searched for cash and, finding only ₹1,500 in the victim’s wallet, demanded that he transfer ₹20,000 online.
When Losalka refused to pay or share his PIN and allegedly abused Komal, Dhruba punched him. The two tied his legs with a towel, dragged him from the bed to the floor, and smothered him with a bedsheet, killing him.
Attempt to Flee and ATM Withdrawal
CCTV footage later showed the couple running down the corridor. Around 2:30 am, they left Losalka’s room, retrieved their belongings from the adjoining room, and exited the hotel.
Police said the pair then booked a Rapido bike taxi to Ultadanga, used Losalka’s ATM card to withdraw ₹11,000, and later boarded a local train in an attempt to escape.
Body Found the Next Morning
When Losalka failed to check out the following morning, hotel staff entered the room and discovered his body — naked, with his legs tied, bruise marks, and bleeding from the nose. A deep gash was also found on his head.
The post-mortem confirmed death due to mechanical asphyxia caused by strangulation, ruling it a homicide.
Investigation Findings
Joint Commissioner of Police Rupesh Kumar said the accused were tracked and arrested on Sunday. Both phones belonging to the accused and victim have been seized; several social media apps were found deleted and will undergo forensic examination.
Police said Komal and Dhruba, both in their 20s, have known each other since Class 11 and live together in Dum Dum. They allegedly used the dating app Bubble as a couple to connect with potential targets.
Condoms were recovered from the crime scene, and the victim’s social media accounts — including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook — were deactivated after the murder.
Motive Still Under Probe
While extortion is believed to be the primary motive, officers say the exact sequence of events will be verified once forensic reports of the phones are obtained.
