Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, INDIA: A 20-year-old woman was critically injured after being pushed out of a moving train by a drunk passenger near Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district on Sunday November 2 night. The shocking incident occurred around 8.30 p.m. when the Kerala Express was travelling from Aluva to Thiruvananthapuram.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the accused, identified as Suresh Kumar (50), a painting labourer from Panachamoodu in Thiruvananthapuram, allegedly attacked Sreekutty, a resident of Palode, after she refused to move away from the doorway. Sreekutty and her friend Archana (19) of PTP Nagar were travelling in the unreserved compartment of the Kerala Express.

Police said Suresh, who had boarded the train from Kottayam, was heavily intoxicated at the time of the attack. “In a fit of rage, after Sreekutty refused to move from the doorway, he kicked her in the back and pushed her out of the moving train,” the FIR stated. When Archana screamed for help, the accused allegedly grabbed her hand and leg and tried to push her out as well, but she managed to escape with the help of other passengers.

Passengers immediately pulled the emergency chain to stop the train and alerted both the Railway Police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF). A search operation was launched, and within minutes, Sreekutty was found lying on the tracks about two kilometres from Varkala station, near the Varkala–Ayanthi bridge.

She was first taken to the Varkala Mission Hospital on a MEMU train and later shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital (MCH) due to the severity of her injuries. Hospital authorities confirmed that she sustained serious head, spinal, and abdominal injuries, and she remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under ventilator support. Doctors said her condition has shown slight improvement but continues to be critical.

The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Police have registered a case of attempt to murder under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused was intercepted by RPF personnel at Kochuveli station and handed over to the Railway Police. His arrest has been recorded, and he will be produced before a magistrate after completing legal formalities.

Police said a medical examination confirmed that Suresh was intoxicated. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he attacked Sreekutty after she did not move aside when he asked her to.

Speaking to reporters, Archana recounted the terrifying moments of the attack. “He kicked her out of the train and then tried to pull me down as well. I managed to hold onto the handrail, and other passengers pulled me back to safety,” she said.

Sreekutty’s mother, Priyadarshini, said her daughter might have confronted the man over inappropriate behaviour. “She is battling for her life. I raised her with great difficulty — now all I want is the best possible treatment for her,” she said, fighting back tears.

Police officials said a team of doctors at MCH will review Sreekutty’s condition on Tuesday to decide whether surgery is required. The investigation is ongoing, with police also examining whether the accused had earlier misbehaved with other passengers.
