New Delhi, INDIA: In a gruesome case of domestic violence, a 28-year-old man suffered severe burns after his wife allegedly poured boiling oil on him while he was asleep and then sprinkled red chilli powder over his wounds in south Delhi’s Madangir area last week.
The victim, Dinesh Kumar, who works with a pharmaceutical company, was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital with deep burns on his face, chest, and arms and is currently undergoing treatment in the ICU.
According to police, the attack took place around 3.15 a.m. on October 2, when Kumar was asleep beside his young daughter. “He woke up with a burning sensation and found his wife, Sadhna, holding a container of hot oil. She then threw chilli powder on his burns and threatened to pour more oil if he raised an alarm,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan.
Hearing his screams, the landlord and neighbours rushed upstairs. “The door was locked from inside. When it was finally opened, we saw him writhing in pain while his wife stood nearby,” said Anjali, the landlord’s daughter. “She initially claimed she was taking him to the hospital, but when she began walking in the opposite direction, my father stopped her and took Dinesh to the hospital himself.”
Police were alerted after receiving a medico-legal intimation from the hospital. An FIR was subsequently registered at Ambedkar Nagar Police Station under sections 118 (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt using dangerous weapons or means), 124 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by acid, etc.), and 326 (mischief by fire or explosive substance, etc.) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Preliminary investigation revealed that the couple, originally from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, had been married for eight years and often fought over domestic issues. “The woman had previously filed complaints against her husband at the Crime Against Women (CAW) Cell — one two years ago and another just weeks before the incident,” said a senior police officer.
The woman has not yet been arrested, as the investigation is in its initial stage, officials said. Police are recording statements from neighbours and examining evidence to ascertain the sequence of events leading up to the attack.
Dinesh remains under observation at Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors have described his condition as critical but stable.
