Ajmer, Rajasthan, INDIA: A violent family feud over a marital dispute turned deadly in Ajmer in the intervening night of October 6 and 7, claiming the lives of two sisters and leaving at least seven others injured. The shocking incident took place around 1 am near the Kayad Tiraha area under the Civil Lines police station limits, when the in-laws of a man’s estranged wife allegedly attacked his family and ran over the victims with a pickup vehicle.
The deceased were identified as Meenakshi Banjara (30) and Pinky Banjara (25), both residents of the Kayar Road Banjara settlement. The attack, according to police, stemmed from tensions between two related Banjara families over a failed marriage.
Dispute Over Marriage Turns Fatal
The complainant, Ishwar Banjara (30), brother of the deceased women, told police that his marriage to Reena (25)—a woman from Kishangarh—had soured about three months ago. Reena had left Ishwar’s home and returned to her parental house. Efforts to reconcile during a meeting on October 4 reportedly failed, heightening animosity between the two families.
Late on Monday October 6 night, Ishwar alleged, his father-in-law Chhotu Lal, brother-in-law Mukesh, uncle Hetram, and several others from Kishangarh arrived in two vehicles—a pickup truck and a car—and launched a violent attack on his family while they were asleep.
“They came armed with sticks and rods, shouting abuses and hitting anyone they saw. When my sisters rushed out to protect us, they drove the pickup over them,” Ishwar said in his complaint. “Both were lying unconscious. We rushed them to JLN Hospital, but doctors declared them dead.”
Deadly Assault and Casualties
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers drove recklessly through the narrow slum lanes, crashing into huts and striking sleeping family members. Seven people, including three who sustained fractures, were admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Government Hospital for treatment.
The brother of the deceased women, said, “Around 1 a.m., two vehicles arrived. My sisters went out to see what was happening, and the pickup ran over them deliberately. They tried to kill all of us. There had been a heated quarrel between the families just two days ago.”
Tense Scenes, Community Outrage
Tension gripped the area on Tuesday as enraged members of the Banjara community staged a protest outside the hospital, refusing to accept the bodies until all accused were arrested.
“The community is demanding immediate arrests before cremation,” a senior police officer said.
Police Action and Investigation
Civil Lines Station House Officer (SHO) Shambhu Singh confirmed that eight to ten suspects had been detained for questioning. “We have detained several suspects and are verifying their involvement. A case of murder, attempt to murder, and rioting has been registered. The forensic team has inspected the site, and both vehicles have been seized,” Singh said.
He added that the police are investigating whether the deaths were a result of intentional ramming or a consequence of the chaotic brawl.
The bodies of Meenakshi and Pinky were sent for post-mortem examination, and additional police forces were deployed in the area to prevent any escalation of violence.
Background
The Banjara community, traditionally nomadic, often resides in densely populated settlements across Ajmer and Kishangarh. Officials said personal disputes sometimes escalate into large-scale confrontations due to strong kinship networks and interlinked marriages.
As investigations continue, police have assured strict action against those responsible. “No one involved in this brutal act will be spared,” said SHO Shambhu Singh.
