Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, INDIA: In a disturbing incident captured on CCTV, a 20-year-old man was arrested for allegedly harassing and throttling a 14-year-old girl in the Kithaur area of Meerut district. The accused, identified as Jaanu alias Jaane Alam, was taken into custody on October 5 after a brief chase, following the circulation of video footage that showed him assaulting the minor on a public street.

According to police officials, the incident occurred on October 3 when the girl, who had travelled from Ghaziabad to visit her grandmother’s home in Kithaur, confronted Alam for secretly recording her video and circulating it among locals in the village. When she demanded to check his phone, Alam allegedly grabbed her by the neck and attempted to assault her.

Hearing her screams, nearby residents rushed to the scene, forcing the accused to flee. The entire sequence was captured by a CCTV camera installed in the vicinity. The footage, which soon went viral on social media, showed Alam throttling the girl before running away.

Following a complaint lodged by the girl’s father, the Kithaur police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to assault and harassment.

Police teams launched a manhunt and tracked the accused to the Shahjahanpur canal road area. During his attempted escape, Alam reportedly fell into a pit and fractured his right arm. “He was overpowered and arrested. The accused has been sent for medical treatment,” the Meerut Police said in an official statement.

Senior officials confirmed that forensic and digital examinations of the accused’s phone and other devices are underway to verify whether he had recorded and circulated the girl’s video. The CCTV footage will serve as key evidence in the case.

“The accused will face strict legal action under POCSO and IPC provisions. Crimes against minors will not be tolerated, and swift justice will be ensured,” a police spokesperson said.

The incident has sparked public outrage, with social media users demanding stricter surveillance and tougher penalties for crimes involving minors. Meerut Police have stated that they made the CCTV footage public to highlight their prompt response and arrest within days of the crime.

Investigation is ongoing, and the recovered electronic evidence will be crucial in establishing the full extent of the accused’s actions.
