Guna. Madhya Pradesh, INDIA: In a horrifying incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district, a farmer was brutally assaulted and crushed under a Thar SUV allegedly over a land dispute, while his two minor daughters were beaten and stripped when they tried to save him. The incident occurred on Sunday October 26 afternoon in Ganeshpura village under the Fatehgarh police station limits.
According to the police, the victim, Ram Swaroop Dhakad, was on his way to his field with his wife when he was attacked by a group led by Mahendra Nagar, allegedly a local BJP functionary. The assault lasted nearly an hour before the farmer was run over by a vehicle and left grievously injured on the road. He later succumbed to his injuries at the Guna district hospital.
The Attack
In her complaint to the Fatehgarh police, one of Dhakad’s daughters said the family was ambushed by a group of 10–15 people carrying wooden sticks and iron rods.
“We heard shouting and ran outside to help my father. They hit him with their car. When I tried to rescue him, they sat on me, tore my clothes, pulled my hair, and assaulted me. They also fired a bullet in the air to threaten us,” the girl stated in the FIR.
Eyewitness Ram Babu Nagar corroborated the victim family’s account, saying: “Ram Swaroop was beaten with sticks by a group of around 15 people. When his daughter tried to intervene, Mahendra sat on her chest and assaulted her. Then Jitender drove the Thar over Ram Swaroop’s feet, crushing both his legs.”
The family alleged that the attackers prevented them and local villagers from taking the injured farmer to a hospital for almost an hour. By the time he was shifted to the Guna district hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Land Dispute at the Centre of Violence
Police investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from an ongoing land dispute between Dhakad and Kanhaiya Nagar, a resident of Pachlavada in Rajasthan. The dispute reportedly involved six bighas of agricultural land located in Rajasthan.
“Due to this enmity, Kanhaiya, Mahendra, and around 13–14 others—including some women—assaulted Ram Swaroop. He sustained multiple fractures and serious injuries,” said Fatehgarh Station House Officer (SHO) Jayanarayan Sharma.
The victim’s brother, Ramkumar Dhakad, alleged that Mahendra Nagar had been threatening small farmers in the region to sell their land at throwaway prices. “My brother refused to sell, and that’s why they killed him,” he said.
Political Fallout and Allegations
The incident has sparked political outrage, with the Congress accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of shielding the accused.
Congress MLA from Bamori, Rishi Agrawal, condemned the killing, saying: “Crimes of violence, land grabbing, and atrocities against women are increasing in Madhya Pradesh. The Chief Minister, who is also the Home Minister, cannot escape responsibility. Police are working under the pressure of those in power.”
While initial police reports mentioned that the accused had no formal political ties, Guna district BJP president Dharmendra Sikarwar later admitted that Mahendra Nagar was a party member and held the position of booth president.
“Yes, Mahendra Nagar is associated with the BJP at the local level. However, the party does not condone any act of violence. Law will take its course,” Sikarwar told reporters.
However, BJP spokesperson Shivam Shukla later issued a clarification, saying the party has no connection with the crime.
“The accused may have been a former sarpanch, but he is not a BJP office bearer. Political opponents are trying to malign the party by circulating old photos,” he said.
Police Action
An FIR has been registered against 18 persons, including Mahendra Nagar, his relatives, and three women, under sections related to murder (302 IPC), assault, outraging the modesty of a woman, and other relevant provisions.
“Statements of the victim’s family have been recorded, and multiple teams have been formed to arrest the accused,” SHO Sharma confirmed.
As of Monday October 27 evening, police said raids were being carried out in multiple locations in Guna and nearby Rajasthan districts to trace the fugitives.
