Chatra, Jharkhand, INDIA: A long-standing love affair ended in tragedy on Thursday September 18 evening after a heated dispute over marriage plans led to the death of a 34-year-old man in Jharkhand’s Chatra district.

The victim, Mohammed Muntajir, a resident of Sasang village in Latehar district, had travelled to Lamta village under the Lawalong police station limits to meet his partner, Shabbu Parveen alias Noorjahan (24). According to police, the meeting turned violent after the couple began arguing over their marriage.

During the altercation, Noorjahan allegedly attacked Muntajir with a sharp knife, stabbing him in the chest and stomach. Neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing his screams and took him to Chatra Sadar Hospital. Doctors, citing the severity of his injuries, referred him to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. However, Muntajir succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Significantly, before his death, Muntajir gave a statement to police officers, naming Noorjahan as the assailant. Based on this dying declaration, an FIR for murder was registered.

Lawalong Police Station officer-in-charge Prashant Mishra confirmed that Noorjahan was arrested from her residence shortly after the incident. The knife used in the attack was also recovered. She was produced in court on Friday September 19 and remanded to judicial custody.

Police sources said both families were aware of the couple’s relationship and marriage discussions had been underway. Investigators suspect the disagreement over finalising the wedding date triggered the fatal argument.

The incident has shocked the local community, with residents expressing disbelief that a love affair, once headed towards marriage, ended in such violence. Police have launched further investigations to determine the exact circumstances that led to the killing.
