Hassan, Karnataka, INDIA: A 32-year-old woman was killed in Hassan district on Wednesday August 20 night after a married man, enraged over her rejection of his love proposal, allegedly drove a car into a lake with her inside. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Ravi, and booked him for murder.

The victim, Shweta, had been living with her parents in Chandanahalli after separating from her husband. According to police officials, she had known Ravi for several years as they had previously worked together. Despite being married, Ravi had been pursuing Shweta for months, pressuring her to enter into a relationship with him and even claiming he would leave his wife if she agreed.

However, Shweta reportedly rejected his advances, angering Ravi. On Wednesday August 20 evening, he called her to meet him and invited her for a ride. While she was sitting in his car, Ravi allegedly steered the vehicle straight into the Chandanahalli lake.

Eyewitnesses and officials confirmed that Ravi managed to swim to safety, but Shweta was trapped inside the submerged car and drowned. Rescue teams rushed to the spot and pulled out the vehicle along with Shweta’s body after several hours of operation. Videos and photos of the late-night rescue effort were widely circulated on social media.

Following the incident, Ravi initially tried to portray the episode as an accident. During police interrogation, he claimed that the car had accidentally slipped into the lake and that while he escaped, Shweta could not. However, police grew suspicious of his statements and, acting on a complaint lodged by Shweta’s family, registered a case of murder against him.

“Based on the circumstances and the family’s complaint, we have arrested Ravi for intentionally causing the death of Shweta. Further investigation is underway,” a police officer said.

The shocking incident has sparked outrage, highlighting the vulnerability of women facing harassment and coercion in relationships.
