Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Maharashtra, INDIA: In a shocking case of alleged honour killing, a 26-year-old man was brutally beaten to death by the family of a woman he wished to marry. The incident took place on July 22 in the Sangvi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, when the victim was called to the woman’s house on the pretext of discussing a marriage proposal.

The deceased has been identified as Rameshwar Ghengat, who police said was in a relationship with his relative. Despite opposition from the woman’s family, the couple had remained adamant about marrying each other.

According to police, the woman’s family invited Rameshwar and his parents to their home under the guise of marriage talks. However, during the meeting, a quarrel broke out between the two families. The woman’s father, Prashant Sarsar, along with other relatives, allegedly dragged Rameshwar into a separate room and thrashed him mercilessly.

Rameshwar sustained serious injuries in the assault and was rushed to a private hospital. Despite intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries.

Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Koli of Sangvi Police Station confirmed that a case has been registered against 11 people, including the woman’s father. “So far, nine accused have been arrested. Two others are absconding, and efforts are underway to trace them,” Koli said.

Family’s Opposition

Investigators revealed that the woman’s family strongly opposed the marriage because of Rameshwar’s criminal background, which included a rape case and charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Despite this, the couple continued to press for marriage, which ultimately led to the confrontation.

Case Details

Initially, police registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused. Following Rameshwar’s death, charges are being updated to include murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Community Shocked

The brutal killing has sparked outrage in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area, with residents expressing shock over the violent turn of a family dispute. The incident is being widely described as an honour killing, as the family allegedly resorted to violence to prevent a marriage they disapproved of.

Police said investigations are continuing, and the two absconding accused are expected to be arrested soon.
