Pune, Maharashtra, INDIA” A 40-year-old unemployed techie from Manipur was arrested last week after he allegedly attempted to rob a bank manager’s residence in Pune at gunpoint. The accused, identified as Sangboi Kom Serto, reportedly posed as a courier delivery agent before threatening the manager’s teenage son with a licensed firearm. He was eventually overpowered by a relative of the bank manager and handed over to police.

According to Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Koli of Sangvi Police Station, the incident took place around 6 pm on July 31 at a housing society in the Pimple Gurav area. Serto, who had lost his job as a business analyst last year, was allegedly under severe financial stress due to unpaid EMIs on two flats he owned in the NIBM area of Pune. Police believe he attempted the robbery out of desperation.

“The accused visited the bank where the manager worked and observed his movements for several days,” said Inspector Koli. “He followed the manager to his residence and conducted a detailed recce before attempting the robbery.”

On the day of the incident, Serto allegedly rang the doorbell and introduced himself as a courier agent delivering bank documents. When the manager’s son opened the door, he asked him to fetch his father’s ID for verification. As the boy turned away, Serto forcibly entered the house, pulled out a gun, and demanded cash and valuables.

However, the manager’s brother, who was present in the house at the time, acted swiftly. He overpowered the accused from behind, disarmed him, and alerted the police. In the ensuing struggle, the brother sustained minor injuries.

A police team arrived at the scene and arrested Serto. Officers recovered a licensed revolver with 19 live rounds, a kukri (sharp-edged weapon), and a suspicious object that initially appeared to be an explosive but was later confirmed to be fake.

Inspector Koli confirmed that Serto had completed business management courses and had previously worked in IT firms as a business assistant and analyst. After losing his job last year, he reportedly exhausted his savings trying to stay afloat financially.

“He defaulted on his home loans and found himself deep in debt. Preliminary investigation indicates that the crime was not premeditated over months, but a desperate and dangerous act stemming from mounting pressure,” Koli added.

Serto has been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to robbery and assault, as well as provisions of the Arms Act. He remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
