Jalgaon, Maharashtra, INDIA: A 21-year-old Muslim youth was brutally beaten to death by a mob in Jamner taluka, Jalgaon district, on Monday August 11 afternoon after being spotted with a 17-year-old girl from another community. The attackers also assaulted the youth’s parents and sister when they tried to intervene.

The victim, identified as Suleman Rahim Khan Pathan, a resident of Chhoti Betawad village, had travelled to Jamner that morning to submit an online application for the police recruitment exam. Around 3:30 pm, while sitting with the girl in a café near Jamner police station, he was confronted by a group of 9–15 men who allegedly snatched his mobile phone, assaulted him after checking its contents, and forcibly dragged him out.

According to eyewitnesses, Khan was bundled into a vehicle, taken to multiple locations, and repeatedly beaten with sticks, iron rods, and bare hands before being paraded back to his village. Near his home, the attackers continued the assault until he lost consciousness. His family rushed to his aid, but they too were beaten, leaving his father, mother, sister, and 80-year-old grandfather injured.

“They didn’t spare anyone. My son’s body was covered in wounds. They left him outside our house thinking he was dead,” Khan’s father, Rahim, said, dismissing claims of a romantic relationship as “false” and alleging that his son was targeted deliberately.

Khan was rushed to Jalgaon District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Post-mortem reports indicated fatal internal injuries from the sustained assault.

The killing triggered protests in Jamner, with relatives, community members, and local leaders staging a sit-in outside the police station, demanding strict action, including charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Police have so far arrested eight suspects — Abhishek Rajkumar Rajput (22), Ghanshyam alias Suraj Bihari Lal Sharma (25), Deepak Bajirao (20), Ranjat alias Ranjit Ramkrishna Matade (48), Aditya Devade, Krishna Teli, Shejwal Teli, and Rishikesh Teli — with search operations underway for other alleged perpetrators. The arrested individuals have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder, kidnapping, rioting, and unlawful assembly.

Jamner police inspector Murlidhar Kasar said additional forces from the crime branch and Nashik Range have been deployed to prevent further unrest. Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Reddy stated that investigations are ongoing, and the exact motive is yet to be confirmed, though preliminary findings point to personal enmity.

Former AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel accused the police of pressuring the family to conduct last rites before all suspects were in custody, calling it “another case of mob lynching” in Maharashtra.

The incident has heightened communal tensions in the region, with calls for stronger legal measures against mob violence
